Update 1 | To Israel with Excitement

Team members heading out for a walk to an authentic local lunch spot, with the Sea of Galilee in the background.

There is something special about the beginning of an Azmera haven retreat. Before the attendees arrive, before the first worship session, and before the many conversations and prayers that will unfold, God is already bringing together a team of women who have said yes to serving Him.

This week, our Care Crew has been gathering in Israel, preparing their hearts to welcome women serving cross-culturally. And what an extraordinary place to begin! With the Sea of Galilee stretching out before them, the team has been reminded of the faithfulness of Jesus, who called ordinary people to follow Him and whose presence continues to transform lives today.

Janelle Hsia, one of our Care Crew volunteers and our on-site blog contributor, shares these first impressions from Israel.

As I met the other women on the trip, we had an instant connection around our relationship with Jesus. Our quick introductions included our names, information about our families, and what brought us to Azmera.

Most of us had an association with women's ministry that was readily shared, and we discussed how we pour into other women. But the best part was the enthusiasm everyone felt about going to Israel!

To add extra excitement, we arrived in Israel on election day, so many of the Israeli citizens quickly deplaned to go vote. We praise God that everyone made it safely and without incident.

Traveling to Israel at this particular time has brought questions and concerns from family and friends. With so much uncertainty in the region, loved ones understandably wondered why the team would choose to go.

Janelle shared that, even in the midst of those concerns, the team has chosen to trust the Lord with their journey. Their prayer is also for the families waiting at home, that they would experience His comfort and peace.

And as the volunteers began spending time together, something beautiful was happening. Through shared meals, laughter, conversations, and prayer, they were getting to know one another beyond their names and ministry roles. These early days provide a valuable opportunity to share what is on their hearts, lay down personal burdens, and prepare to be fully present for the women arriving on Friday.

But perhaps one of the most meaningful parts of these first days has been the opportunity to spend time with the Lord while looking out over the Sea of Galilee.

During morning prayer, we reflected on the view outside the giant windows, which is the Sea of Galilee. It is with wonder and reverence that we remember Jesus calling His first disciples along these shores.

We ask the Holy Spirit to come upon us, to make us strong for the women we will be supporting, to come alongside the women serving cross-culturally, to be good listeners, and to honor their stories.

What a powerful reminder that the same Jesus who called His disciples to follow Him along these waters is the One who continues to call and equip His people today.

As the Care Crew prepares for the arrival of the attendees, our prayer is that each woman will enter this retreat ready to rest, be loved, and receive whatever the Lord has prepared for her.

Janelle closes her reflection with an invitation we would love to extend to each of you:

Please continue to partner with us in prayer as we prepare our hearts to pour into these women. Let them arrive ready to receive the love of Jesus and be willing to accept what Jesus has prepared for them.

— Janelle Hsia

Thank you for joining us in prayer as the Azmera ISRAEL Haven Retreat 2026 begins. May these next few days be marked by God's presence, meaningful connections, and the kind of rest and encouragement that only He can provide.

The preparations are underway, the hearts are being made ready, and we are trusting the Lord for all that is ahead!
